Cao Zhi and his Seven Steps Poem

After the death of Cao Cao, his son Cao Pi inherited the prime in 220. Cao Pi declared himself the first emperor of the Kingdom of Wei within one year. Cao Zhi (Cao Pi´s younger brother) was called Linzi Marquies.

One day, someone told Cao Pi that Cao Zhi often had drink and swore, even detained the envoy. So Cao Pi captured and wanted to kill him. But they were brothers, and their mother Princess Bian hoped Cao Pi could forgive him. Cao Pi agreed but asked Cao Zhi to produce a poem in seven steps, if Cao Zhi could produce, he would release him; or he would kill him. Because Cao Zhi was very clever and good at poem; then he produced the following poem within seven steps.

煮(zhǔ)豆(dòu)燃(rán)豆(dòu)萁(qí)，豆(dòu)在(zài)釜(fǔ)中(zhōng)泣(qì)；本(běn)是(shì)同(tóng)根(gēn)生(shēng)，相(xiāng)煎(jiān)何(hé)太(tài)急(jí)。

After listening the poem, Cao Pi was ashamed for his behavior and exempted Cao Zhi´s capital crime.
